NEW YORK, April 30 (Xinhua) -- The much anticipated "Spider Man 3" had its U.S. premier on Monday in Queens, New York, hometown of the fictional superhero.
The premier is part of both the Tribeca Film Festival and the "Spider Man Week in New York City," a co-venture by the city and Columbia Pictures.
The rest of the city and the country will have to wait until Friday to see the film, whose global premier was held in Japan on April 16.
Spider Man's New York week will feature events in all five boroughs of the city, which will include spider-theme attractions at the Central Park, Bronx Zoo and the American Museum of Natural History. Original "Spider Man" comic books will also be displayed at the New York Public Library.
"Spider Man" is a comic strip created by Marvel Comics. Before getting his powers when he was bitten by a radioactive spider, he was just an average person named Peter Parker.
Since his incarnation and first appearance in Amazing Fantasy in August 1962, Spider Man has become one of the world's most popular, enduring and commercially successful superheroes.
"Spider Man" first hit theaters in 2004 when he fought the green goblin. In the 2005 "Spider Man 2", he battled Doctor Octopus and finally revealed his secret identity to Mary Jane. In "Spider Man 3", he will fight himself as well as the Sandman.
The first two Spider Man movies have made more than 1.6 billion dollars worldwide. The first movie made 822 million dollars worldwide and the second film garnered 784 million dollars.
"Movies like 'Spider Man 3" generate a lot of interest and excitement in the city, and events like the "Spider Man Week" are a great way to give all New Yorkers and visitors a chance to join in the festivities, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said.
