PARIS, April 1 (Xinhua) -- French left-wing Socialist party called Saturday for a nationwide strike next Tuesday to protest the controversial job law, the First Employment Contract (CPE).

    It is the first time that the French opposition socialist party to call on people to protest the law.

    In a bid to solve unemployment and avoid to be stuck with a costly long-term commitment if employees prove unsuitable or if economic conditions deteriorate, the French parliament adopted the CPE this month.

    The contract allows companies to fire young people under the age of 26 without giving a reason during a two-year trial period, which opponents say will create a generation of "throw-away workers."

    The CPE, which opponents have accused of infringing on workers' rights and making young people harder to get long-term employment, has sparked protests from students, unions and left-wing political parties. Enditem
