RAMALLAH, Sept. 5 (Xinhuanet) -- Ali al-Jarbawi, secretary general of the Palestinian Elections Central Committee said Sunday that the second day of voter registration was excellent.

Jarbawi revealed that the highest percentage of registration was in the northern West Bank town of Salfi and the central Gaza Strip town of Deir el-Ballah.

He expressed hope that other centers of registration in the Palestinian territories and east Jerusalem would witness an increase in the number of voters.

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat was among the first to register in the presidential, parliamentary and municipal elections. However, he has not given a specific date for holding it.

Jarbawi said some registration centers were facing problems caused by the Israeli occupation, as many villages near the West Bank cities of Jenin and Bethlehem were under curfew.

"The Palestinian side is determined to finalize the process of voter registration despite obstacles and difficulties," he said. "We are studying all options, including the extension of the term for registration."

Under the basic law, voter registration should not take more than five weeks, but Jarbawi suggested that the term might be extended by over five weeks.  Enditem
